A HIKING expedition in Terengganu ended in a dramatic mountain rescue after a 48-year-old man suffered a leg injury and was unable to continue descending from Gunung Chemerong, prompting an emergency response by the Fire and Rescue Department.
The operation was carried out by the Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department following an emergency call received at approximately 1.21pm, according to deputy director Senior Fire Superintendent I Shahrin Yusmar Mat Yusof.
He said the injured participant was part of a hiking group and had become stranded near Sungai Bangan waterfall after experiencing fatigue and injury.
“The 48-year-old male participant sustained an injury to his leg and was unable to walk due to exhaustion, requiring assistance from the fire and rescue department to be brought down from the mountain,” Bernama reported him saying.
“At the time the report was received, the participant was at the Sungai Bangan waterfall area on Gunung Chemerong and was reported to be in stable condition.”
The rescue effort involved six firefighters who were deployed into difficult terrain approximately seven kilometres from the base of the mountain. The operation took around six hours to reach the location due to steep and winding paths, compounded by adverse weather conditions including rain.
Shahrin said the challenging geography significantly slowed movement and required sustained effort from the rescue team throughout the operation.
The injured hiker was successfully brought down to the Fire Department’s operations post at the base of the mountain at around 11.55am before being handed over to medical personnel for further treatment.
He added that the hiking expedition comprised 27 participants, including eight women, from a teachers’ and school staff group based in Selangor, accompanied by four mountain guides. - June 8, 2026
