18 vehicles damaged after being hit by drug-positive driver

POLICE have received 18 reports from road users whose vehicles were damaged after being hit by a Mitsubishi Triton driven recklessly and dangerously on the North-South Expressway (PLUS), yesterday.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said initial investigations found that 18 vehicles were damaged in the accident involving the four-wheel drive, which was driven by a 29-year-old man.

“The suspect who was arrested immediately after yesterday’s incident has been remanded for four days starting today to assist in the investigation.

“Further investigations are underway,” he said.

According to him, the case is being investigated under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs, causing an accident.

Initial investigation revealed that the suspect was allegedly driving carelessly and dangerously from the direction of Sungai Dua towards the Penang section, then crashed into several vehicles along the route.

The man was successfully detained by the public on the Butterworth-Kulim Highway (BKE) near a petrol station in Seberang Jaya, before being handed over to the police who arrived at the scene.

Further examination of the suspect revealed a cross-body bag containing a transparent plastic packet containing a crystal substance believed to be syabu (methamphetamine) weighing 0.75 grams.

Also found was a packet containing 2.38 grams of suspected ketamine.

A urine screening test conducted later found the suspect positive for syabu and morphine.

A police record check also found the suspect had 15 previous drug-related criminal records and two ordinary criminal records. – June 9, 2026
