PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) Information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa has revealed that he was personally tasked by the PAS leadership to broker peace between the warring factions within Bersatu in an effort to prevent a split that threatened the unity of Perikatan Nasional (PN), but said every attempt at reconciliation ultimately failed.
The PAS Central Working Committee member said he was directly involved in negotiations and held several meetings with leaders from both sides, including discussions in London and Kuala Lumpur, as part of an extensive effort to preserve the opposition coalition.
"I was directly involved. I tried several times to reconcile them. I met them in London and in Kuala Lumpur," he said at the launch of Kelantan City FC's new logo and coaching line-up on Saturday.
According to Annuar, PAS had entrusted him with the responsibility of acting as an intermediary in the hope of preventing internal divisions from weakening PN ahead of future political contests.
"PAS asked me to find a way to reconcile the two groups, but eventually PAS made a final decision. It then became impossible to keep one of the groups within the same coalition," he said.
The PN Information Chief said the collapse of reconciliation efforts left the coalition with little choice but to decide which faction should continue to receive its political backing.
"If we were forced to choose one side, we had to assess which group was stronger and in the better position.
"In the end, we chose the group led by the Deputy President of Bersatu," he said.
Annuar stressed that throughout the mediation process, PAS's objective had been to keep both sides together and strengthen Perikatan Nasional as a united political force.
"We wanted both sides to remain together. We also submitted a formal written proposal for reconciliation.
"I personally approached them and presented proposals as part of the peace efforts," he said.
He said all initiatives had been undertaken in good faith to avoid a breakdown in relations, adding that political differences should never have undermined broader cooperation within the opposition alliance.
"When those differences could no longer be resolved, separation became the best option so that all parties could continue on their respective paths," he said.
Annuar added that the eventual split became unavoidable after repeated mediation efforts failed, allowing each side to chart its own political direction independently.
On June 8, PAS announced the termination of its political cooperation with Bersatu following a special meeting of the party's Central Working Committee. - June 21, 2026
