NFCC advisory role sparks questions; Hamzah seeks clarity on Azam Baki appointment
“This is a question that the government must answer.” - July 2, 2026

OPPOSITION Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has questioned the rationale behind the appointment of former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki as an adviser to the National Financial Crime Centre (NFCC).

In a press conference at the parliament building, Hamzah said the appointment raises concerns given that Azam has previously been linked to several controversies, including allegations involving “corporate mafia” and share ownership issues.

“This is a question that the government must answer.”

“When I was asked by the media, I am now asking on behalf of the media — what is the justification for appointing Tan Sri Azam as an adviser to the NFCC when he is still associated with issues that are under scrutiny?” he said.

The issue has also drawn attention from MCA, which has called for an immediate explanation from the government.

MCA Youth Deputy Chief Mike Chong Yew Chuan said the reported appointment has raised public concern, especially as civil society groups continue to push for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into alleged “corporate mafia” networks linked to the matter.

In the same press conference, Hamzah also took a swipe at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, referencing a previous exchange over the cancellation of the 2026 Felda Settlers Day celebration in Johor.

“This is a question from the media. As the Prime Minister once asked me, I respond the same way: on behalf of whom? On behalf of the media,” he said.

Hamzah reiterated that the government must uphold transparency in explaining appointments and policy decisions to avoid continued public speculation. – July 2, 2026
