A MODERATE earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck North Sumatra, Indonesia, at 7.37 am today.
In a statement released today, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed that the epicenter of the quake was recorded at coordinates 4.6 degrees North and 96.3 degrees East at a depth of 30 kilometres.
The seismic activity was located approximately 59 kilometres north-east of Meulaboh, Indonesia.
MetMalaysia noted that tremors may have been felt across states along the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia as a result of the quake.
However, the department assured the public that the event poses no tsunami threat to Malaysia. - October 4, 2026
