A TOTAL of 3.04 billion messages (SMS) and 2.5 billion suspicious and fraudulent calls were blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with telecommunications service providers from January 1, 2022, till June 30 this year.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil stated that, in addition, 190,429 mobile and fixed lines identified as sending suspicious SMS messages were also terminated during the period.
He said that the measure was to curb the misuse of communication services for fraudulent purposes, protecting the public from becoming victims of scam syndicates.
"MCMC works closely with PDRM through actions such as requesting the removal of social media content, blocking websites and providing technical support, including the provision of information and digital forensic analysis to assist investigations.
"In addition, MCMC implements regulatory and enforcement actions if there are violations of legal provisions under its jurisdiction, particularly the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) and the Online Security Act 2025 (Act 866)," he said in an oral reply to a question by Datuk Seri S Vell Paari Samy Vellu (MIC).
Fahmi said MCMC also proactively monitors and can take action against harmful online content in accordance with Section 233 of Act 588.
He said under Act 866, MCMC can take action against content involving financial fraud in an effort to strengthen online security.
"The government, through MCMC, has also provided an official complaint mechanism to enable the public to report telephone numbers, website links or accounts suspected of being involved in fraudulent activities, including scam calls impersonating government officials, financial institutions, the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and public agencies.
"For the period from January 1, 2026, to July 7, 2026, a total of 158 complaints related to fraudulent call activities, including impersonating government officials, were received and processed through the main channel for resolving consumer complaints, namely the Consumer Redress Portal (CRP)," he added. – July 21, 2026
