POLICE are tracking an e-hailing driver to assist investigations into a viral video showing a man allegedly making remarks deemed insulting towards the Quran and Islam in the city on Friday.
Johor Bahru Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffei said police received a report from a police officer regarding the video at 3.25pm on Friday.
He said preliminary investigations found that the incident was believed to have taken place at about 5.55pm on Thursday in the Johor Bahru city area.
“The recording has caused dissatisfaction as it is believed to touch on sensitivities and insult Islam.
“Based on the dashboard camera (dashcam) recording, a conversation took place between a man believed to be an e-hailing driver and another man suspected to be a passenger who made statements related to the Quran and allegedly insulted Islam,” he said in a statement on Friday.
The two-minute-20-second recording captured the voice of a man believed to be the e-hailing passenger allegedly claiming that the Quran teaches about killing.
However, the e-hailing driver was heard challenging the remarks and advising the passenger to be careful when discussing Islam.
The driver also reportedly warned the passenger not to insult the religion before the passenger allegedly apologised and left the vehicle after it stopped by the roadside.
Azrul Hisham said the case is being investigated under several legal provisions, including Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Police are continuing investigations to identify all individuals involved and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. - August 1, 2026
