A KELANA Jaya LRT train broke down while travelling from Taman Jaya to Universiti station this morning, leaving passengers stranded on the tracks for about 20 minutes before they were transferred to another train.
A passenger said a loud boom was heard moments before the train came to an abrupt stop, causing several passengers to lose their balance.
Passengers were then seen contacting Rapid KL’s emergency hotline as they waited for assistance.
Rapid KL personnel later arrived and helped passengers move to another train on the opposite track.
In a post on X, Rapid KL said the Kelana Jaya Line was experiencing delays after a train stopped due to a power outage at Universiti station.
Rapid KL has been contacted for further details on the incident, including the cause of the power outage and the number of passengers affected.
The incident is the latest in a series of technical problems to affect the Klang Valley’s rail network this year.
On May 18, a Kelana Jaya Line train was taken out of service at Kelana Jaya station following a component failure, resulting in delays along the line.
On May 13, another train on the Kelana Jaya Line lost power and stopped between KL Sentral and Pasar Seni, leaving passengers temporarily stranded.
The line also suffered several disruptions in February. On Feb 24, two separate incidents prompted Transport Minister Anthony Loke to order a probe into the repeated disruptions.
Four trains were subsequently withdrawn from service on Feb 27 after experiencing technical problems, causing delays during the morning rush hour.
Rapid Rail later said some of the trains had been withdrawn for minor repairs and disputed descriptions of the incident as a breakdown.
On April 13, services on the Kelana Jaya Line were also disrupted by a technical fault, with normal operations restored later that morning.
Another incident at Taman Jaya station in June saw a thin melted wire become caught in the train’s power supply system, producing a sound likened to a minor explosion.
The affected train was removed from service as a precaution, and passengers were transferred to another train.
Despite the string of incidents, overall disruptions across the Rapid KL rail network have declined in recent years.
Prasarana recorded 31 rail disruptions in 2025, compared with 71 in 2024 and 118 in 2023. The network recorded 252 disruptions in 2022.
The figures point to an overall improvement, although repeated technical problems on the Kelana Jaya Line remain a concern for commuters who rely on the service daily.
Today’s incident again left passengers waiting for answers as Rapid KL worked to restore normal operations. – August 13, 2026
