PARENTS must take an active role in warning their children about the legal dangers of becoming bank account mules, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Ewon Benedick has said.
Speaking at the launch of the Digital Parentage programme in Kota Kinabalu today, Ewon cautioned that allowing third parties to use personal bank accounts for money transfers could expose account holders to criminal prosecution if the transactions were linked to scams or other illicit activities.
“Technology can change how the community operates—from financial transactions to applying for government aid—but with these advancements come significant risks,” the Penampang MP said.
He said digital tools such as QR payments and online banking had become essential to everyday life, but users needed the knowledge to use them safely and avoid exploitation.
Ewon urged parents to continuously educate their children about responsible digital practices, particularly the dangers of handing over access to their bank accounts in exchange for easy money.
He stressed that young people must understand that allowing others to use their accounts could carry serious legal consequences, even if they were not directly involved in the scam or illegal transaction. - August 29, 2026
