PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a special meeting on Thursday to examine immediate measures to ease the impact of higher electricity bills on affected households.
The meeting will involve the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the Finance Ministry (MOF).
Anwar said the government had taken note of public concerns over the recent increase in electricity bills and that the matter required immediate attention.
He said targeted subsidies would continue to be maintained to protect the majority of households, with about 80 per cent of domestic users consuming no more than 600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a month remaining protected from higher rates resulting from increased fuel costs this year.
However, haze and hotter weather in recent weeks had driven up electricity consumption among some households, pushing their monthly usage above 600 kWh and making them subject to the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA).
“Therefore, the MADANI Government will hold a special meeting tomorrow with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Energy Commission (ST), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the Finance Ministry (MOF) to examine immediate mitigation measures to reduce the impact of higher electricity bills on affected households,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Anwar said the government would continue to ensure that targeted subsidy measures were implemented fairly and reasonably, with the interests and welfare of the people remaining a priority. - September 16, 2026
