MALAYSIA’S unsubsidised RON97 price will rise above RM5 a litre from Thursday, with RON95 and diesel also climbing as continued constraints on global refined petroleum supplies push market fuel prices higher.
The Ministry of Finance (MOF) said today that under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM), RON97 will rise 20 sen to RM5.05 a litre from RM4.85, while unsubsidised RON95 will increase 20 sen to RM4.57 from RM4.37.
Unsubsidised diesel will rise 15 sen to RM5.42 a litre from RM5.27 for the Sept 24-30 period, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The latest increase follows a 35-sen rise in all three unsubsidised fuels in the previous week, when RON97 reached RM4.85, RON95 RM4.37 and diesel RM5.27.
This means unsubsidised RON97 has risen 55 sen in two weeks, while RON95 has increased by 55 sen and diesel by 50 sen over the same period.
MOF attributed the latest increase to continued constraints in global supplies of refined petroleum products, with disruptions to refined petroleum production in Russia, one of the world’s largest diesel exporters, adding to supply pressures.
Diesel exports from West Asia also fell by more than 50% between March and August 2026, further tightening supplies, the ministry said.
The ministry said a recovery in global refining capacity and the restoration of petroleum flows through the Strait of Hormuz could help ease pressure on crude and refined petroleum product prices.
However, geopolitical uncertainty is expected to continue driving price volatility, while disruptions to shipping have pushed super-tanker rates on some West Asian routes to about US$1 million a day.
Despite the higher market prices, eligible Malaysians will continue to pay RM1.99 a litre for RON95 under BUDI95 and RM2.10 for diesel under BUDI Diesel.
The government is absorbing RM2.58 a litre in subsidy for BUDI95 recipients, equivalent to 56% of the unsubsidised RON95 price, while BUDI Diesel recipients receive RM3.32 a litre in subsidy, or 61% of the unsubsidised diesel price.
Under the subsidised fuel schemes, RON95 will remain at RM2.05 a litre under the Sistem Kawalan Petrol Bersubsidi (SKPS), while diesel will remain at RM2.15 under the Sistem Kawalan Diesel Bersubsidi (SKDS). - September 23, 2026
