POLICE have launched a murder investigation following the suspicious death of a 16-year-old schoolgirl whose body was found inside a secondary school hall in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat, on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, was found lying in the hall with physical injuries, including severe bruising and dried bloodstains, alongside a shattered ceramic vase recovered nearby.

Irene Sofiya, an orphan who resided with her grandmother while her father worked in Kuala Lumpur, had failed to return home from scheduled afternoon tuition classes. Concerns were raised when a classmate contacted her family at midday to inquire why she had not arrived home.

Her grandmother subsequently rushed to the school grounds and located the teenager lying inside the hall. Although the victim was initially conscious, she soon slipped into unconsciousness and succumbed to her injuries.

Classmates described the victim as a top-performing student who was actively involved in school activities and expected to achieve straight As in her upcoming Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations. Friends noted that her absence during afternoon lessons went initially unnoticed as peers assumed she was unwell.

Specialist forensic teams from the Johor Contingent Police Headquarters and officers from the Criminal Investigation Department were immediately deployed to the scene to secure evidence, while local residents gathered outside the school gates.

Batu Pahat District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani confirmed that the case is under active investigation.

Addressing growing local concern and speculation surrounding the circumstance of her death, Deputy Johor Police Chief Deputy Commissioner Hoo Chuan Huat urged the public and media to refrain from unverified claims while police conclude their scene analysis and determine the formal classification of the case. - October 4, 2026
