FOUR men were each fined RM3,000 by the Magistrates’ Court in Bukit Mertajam today after pleading guilty to conspiring to commit online fraud linked to a love scam syndicate.

The accused were Ho Kui Ming, 33, Edmund Yii Kan Xi, 26, Choo Xin Thuan, 33, and Tiong Weng Chiong, 32.

They entered their guilty pleas after the charge was read out before Magistrate Sharifah Razali.

According to the charge, the four had conspired to carry out unlawful online fraud activities at a premises in Taman Alma Indah, in the Seberang Perai Tengah district, at about 11.15pm on Oct 19.

They were charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 120B(1) of the same code.

If convicted, the offence carries a maximum prison term of five years, a fine, or both.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Amalina Harun prosecuted the case. Two of the accused were represented by lawyer Ima Shakira Mohd Salim, while the other two were represented by Chiang Kian Hong.

During proceedings, defence counsel sought the minimum fine, citing their clients’ early guilty pleas, which they said had saved court time and trial costs.

The court fined each man RM3,000, with six months’ imprisonment in default of payment. - October 28, 2026
