SANDAKAN – Residents here may have to wait longer for water supply in the district to improve as the repair of a water pump that was scheduled to be completed yesterday met with an obstacle.
A source working at the Segaliud Water Treatment Plant here told The Vibes that the repair of the pump was completed yesterday, but a pressure test found there are several leakages in other parts of the pump.
“We are repairing that today and, hopefully, it will pass the test after this so that we can bring the pump back to the plant from the workshop,” he said.
State Works Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin had told The Vibes that the water supply here will be back to normal in a week.
The source said that Bung Moktar's remarks are likely based on the fact that, even after reinstallation of the pump, it takes several days for the water pressure to return to normal.
“Although we are using only one pump in Segaliud Water Treatment Plant now, we are still able to pump 80 million litres of water a day, compared with the normal demand of 100 million litres a day.
“We are just 20 million litres short. It affects the water pressure in most areas, but only residential areas on higher ground are badly affected.”
The source added that the Segaliud plant houses the main pumps for water supply in the district that is directed to the Bukit Garam, Hilltop and Sibuga plants, with each of these smaller plants having its own pump.
Sandakan residents have been suffering water disruption problems for more than two weeks after one of two working pumps at the Segaliud Water Treatment Plant here had to be repaired.

With the entire district relying on just the two old pumps, a new pump was purchased from Japan in August last year but is only expected to reach here in June this year.
Meanwhile, Sandakan MP Vivian Wong offered residents here a temporary solution by providing water via a water truck in Taman Indah Jaya and Taman Pertama starting from 2pm yesterday. – The Vibes, January 10, 2021
