Gerakan slams detractors of Muhyiddin’s emergency rule

GEORGE TOWN – Gerakan lauded Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s government for having the conviction to call for a nationwide state of emergency in view of the rising threat posed by Covid-19.

Its vice-president Baljit Singh said he felt comforted after Muhyiddin assured the public that he would never meddle in Malaysia’s judiciary.

The lawyer said this clearly showed that despite the criticisms borne by the government, Muhyiddin has not sold out the judiciary.

In a statement today, Baljit noted Muhyiddin’s assertion in his televised speech yesterday that he has no intention of meddling in the administration of justice in the country.

“Recent developments sparked by a handful of politicians bent on ensuring the collapse of the Muhyiddin-led government has caused anxiety and uncertainty over the past several months.

“It has not only triggered yet another political upheaval in the nation, but also spooked investors from bringing in much-needed cash and job opportunities for Malaysians.

“In short, the action of these greedy, power-hungry politicians is causing untold harm to the country and also bringing more misery to an already depressed population trying to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

Baljit said it was ironic that the politicians trying hard to topple the government had not even made any attempt to disguise the true cause of their unhappiness with Muhyiddin's administration.

He claimed that they just wanted to be let off from answering for the wrongdoings committed during their own former reign at the highest offices in Putrajaya.

Baljit said that a senior politician of a party that used to be in power had been so brazen that he had said the main reason his party was against the current government was the ongoing “cruel” court cases against his party leaders.

He claimed that the party leader had said that the government needed to be brought down because the prime minister had rejected demands for cases against those hauled to court, now referred to as “kluster mahkamah” (court cluster) by Malaysians, to be dropped.

“Those who have done wrong must be prepared to face the music. Full stop. Muhyiddin’s stand has set him apart from other aspiring leaders of the nation who have had no qualms saying one thing to the people one day and making a complete about-turn the next.

“There have been reports that these politicians, who used to condemn each other over mismanagement of the country, are now working hard behind the scenes to unite and form an alliance to topple the government so that they can take over and cancel out charges against each other,” he claimed.

Baljit said that the phrase “the country needs to start on a clean new slate” had now become their mantra.

“It is not only appalling but downright shameful we have such people aspiring to lead this beautiful nation of ours,” he said.

“Despite being forced to implement yet another movement control order and declaration of emergency, Muhyiddin has promised that general elections would be held once the Covid-19 pandemic is brought under control.

“It is clear enforcing the lockdown was not something the prime minister wanted, but a measure that had to be taken in the interest of people's safety,” he added. – The Vibes, January 13, 2021
