SHAH ALAM – Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has decided to postpone face-to-face registration of old and new students from Sabah and red zone areas for the upcoming academic session, which is scheduled to start next month because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Ir Mohd Azraai Kassim said the same directive was also issued to students from the peninsula who would be registering at the UiTM Sabah campus.

“New and old students can register online. We will issue a notice on the matter today. Learning sessions will also be conducted online,” he told reporters after a presentation ceremony of teaching and learning equipment from the Chinese Embassy to UiTM here, today.

Asked on the university’s convocation ceremony, which is scheduled to be held in November, Mohd Azraai said UiTM was still discussing the best way to conduct it and that there would be an update soon.

Yesterday, the Higher Education Ministry urged all higher learning institutions to postpone the return of their students, as well as the registration of new students, from red zone areas at their respective campuses, which is scheduled to start next month.

It suggested that the registration and learning process for the affected students be done online.

Earlier at the event, Minister at the China Embassy Tang Rui, presented three smart boards and two Huawei laptops worth about RM410,000 to Mohd Azraai.

Mohd Azraai said besides teaching and learning sessions, the equipment would also be used to organise webinars, official events and meetings.

Meanwhile, Tang in his welcoming speech said as the largest public university in Malaysia, UiTM had created more opportunities for Malay students from all over the country to receive a higher education.

"I hope with the equipment provided by the Chinese Embassy today, it will help shorten the physical distance among all students in different campuses with a virtual way for teaching, communications and discussions," he added. – Bernama, September 28, 2020
