KUALA LUMPUR – Due to the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Terengganu, Marang Prison and the Dungun correctional centre will be put under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from tomorrow until February 10.
Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a statement said the Health Ministry has detected 98 Covid-19 cases at Marang Prison, and 99 cases at the Dungun facility, following a mass preliminary testing.
He said the EMCO is to curb the spread of the virus to other inmates, employees and their family members, as well as nearby communities.
He added that health authorities screened 1,262 individuals in Marang, and those who tested positive were detainees at the prison transit centre.
At the Dungun correctional centre, 1,102 individuals were tested, with 99 found positive – 92 detainees, two employees and five close contacts.
Terengganu recorded the highest Covid-19 infectivity rate, or R-naught (R0), in the country yesterday at 1.36.
On another matter, Ismail Sabri said the supply of necessities and essential goods is presently sufficient and will continue to meet the needs of the country.
He said the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry’s enforcement division has conducted daily monitoring on 11 types of supplies at 748 business premises, including retailers (503 premises), wholesalers (151) and manufacturers (29).
It also conducted 1,442 inspections on MCO standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance, and found that 1,417 premises adhered to SOPs, 18 were advised to improve, five received warnings, and two, compounded.
Ismail Sabri said Ops Benteng, held to curb illegal entry at Malaysian borders, rounded up 19 undocumented migrants and seized eight vehicles yesterday.
As of yesterday, 70 sanitation operations – in 37 red zones, two orange zones, nine yellow zones, and one green zone – were executed nationwide.
He said 506 individuals were arrested and issued compounds yesterday for flouting SOPs, with the top offence being not wearing a face mask (112 cases). – The Vibes, January 27, 2021
