[UPDATED] Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases drop below 5,000 mark for first time in 3 days

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia logged 4,214 fresh Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths today, after breaching the 5,000-mark for the past three days.

The Health Ministry said the new infections bring the cumulative cases to 219,173, while the death toll now stands at 770.

It also recorded 4,280 recoveries, bringing the total to 170,329. Nine of the new cases today were imported.

It added that patients under intensive care are at 316, with 137 requiring intubation. 

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 1,392, followed by Johor (1,068), Kuala Lumpur (702) and Perak (193).

Penang saw 119 cases, followed by Sarawak (105) Negri Sembilan (91), Melaka (85), Kelantan (57), Pahang (54), Terengganu (38), Putrajaya (10) and Labuan (7).

Perlis is the only state with no new infections today.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 115 cases were linked to clusters in detention centres including the Tembok Taiping cluster (81 cases), Tembok Renggam cluster (25), Tembok Mempaga cluster (7). Tembok Sg Udang cluster (1) and the Tembok Kemus cluster (1).

The deaths today involved three victims in Negri Sembilan and one each in Johor, Labuan, Sarawak, Selangor, Perak, Melaka and Terengganu.

“All the cases today involved citizens. The ministry extends its condolences to all their families.”

He said the country has seen 831 clusters so far, including 14 new clusters reported today.

Of the total, 430 clusters have ended, including five today – Tembok, GK Tawau, Sentosa Residensi, Menara Wang, and Maringkan clusters.

He added 401 clusters remained active, with 73 clusters reporting new cases, especially the Jalan Puchong construction site cluster (322 cases), Jalan Chulan construction site cluster (85), and Tembok Taiping cluster (81).

Of the 14 new clusters reported today, nine of them are related to workplaces, while three involved high-risk groups, and the remaining two are community clusters.

Selangor’s three new clusters are mostly in Petaling. The Jalan Lagoon construction site cluster in the Petaling district has 76 cases, the Puchong Industry cluster in Petaling logged 44 and the Sg Purun cluster in Hulu Langat and Petaling recorded 27 cases.

The ministry also recorded the Kg Parit Masjid cluster in Muar, Johor with 44 cases.

In Kuala Lumpur, the Jalan Puchong construction site cluster in Lembah Pantai has 332 cases, followed by Jalan Empat in Titiwangsa with 29 cases, and the Jalan Tan cluster in Lembah Pantai with 17.

In Sabah, the ministry logged the Ladang Sg Pin cluster in Kinabatangan with 36 cases, and the Kg Samin cluster in Sipitang, Kota Belud, and Tuaran with 33 cases, as well as the Padas Damit cluster in Beaufort with 32 cases.

Perak saw the Persiaran Raya cluster in Manjung with 18 cases, and the Lapangan Siber cluster in Kinta with 21 cases.

Sarawak recorded the Bintang Daily cluster in the Meradong district with eight cases, while Negri Sembilan has the Nilam Tiga cluster in Seremban with 63 cases. – The Vibes, February 1, 2021
