KUALA LUMPUR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today congratulated former squash queen Datuk Nicol Ann David, who was yesterday voted the World Games’ Greatest Athlete of All Time.
His Majesty, in a Facebook post on Istana Negara’s Facebook page, expressed his joy and pride over the achievement, which has helped Malaysia shine on the global stage.
“This success proves that Malaysia is capable of producing high-quality, high-calibre and world-class athlete and individuals.
“It also proves that with commitment, a strong fighting spirit, hard work and determination, Malaysians can compete and succeed on the global stage.”
Nicol, who was world No. 1 for 109 consecutive months, beat 23 other athletes in the World Games poll.
The Agong described the 37-year-old Penangite’s achievement as a deeply meaningful success story and morale booster for all Malaysians amid the Covid-19 crisis.
He lauded her parents, Desmond and Ann Marie, for their sacrifices and determination in making their daughter the world’s greatest in squash.
The king said he hopes Nicol’s accomplishment will inspire all Malaysians to create their own success in the field of their choosing.
