SHAH ALAM – Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed concern over rising corruption and the spread of fake news with the intent to slander among politicians and civil servants.
Istana Alam Shah, in a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page today, said the ruler reminds Malays, in particular, that graft and slander are great sins in Islam.
“His Royal Highness is of the view that corruption and slander are the cause of division in the country’s politics, further tarnishing the global reputation of the country’s administration.
“This is evidenced by Malaysia’s significant drop in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index last year.”
The sultan said he is shocked by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s disclosure that half of the country’s graft cases involve civil servants.
He called on MACC to continue to eliminate such immoral activities, and expressed hope that suspects are tried in court immediately.
Sultan Sharafuddin advised all citizens to play their part to combat corruption, which can destroy society in the long run.
He praised Malay-language daily Sinar Harian’s reports on corruption under its “Rasuah Busters” segment.
He also noted the increase in fake news on social media.
“His Royal Highness does not want the shortcomings and divisions in the political arena to spread to the point of dividing the people,” said the palace statement.
“He calls on the people of various races to stay united and be wise to reject bad elements, especially corruption and slander, for the well-being of the country and future generations.” – Bernama, February 4, 2021
