KUALA LUMPUR – The coming Chinese New Year festive period is make or break for Malaysia’s efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, said Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
The Health director-general said while there have been gradual improvements recently, it is vital that those celebrating avoid large gatherings that could lead to another spike in infections.
He urged everyone to instead celebrate at home, saying that each and every Malaysian is responsible for making sure the number of new cases continues to drop.
“Covid-19 has yet again (stopped) us from another public celebration... during this Chinese New Year. For those who are celebrating, please stay at home and celebrate with your family.
“More importantly... protect the vulnerable people in your family. Stay home and stay safe,” he posted on Facebook today.
“The onus and responsibility is on everyone. May the Almighty guide and protect us all to end this pandemic in time. InshaAllah.”
Following a record high of 5,728 Covid-19 cases on January 30, the number of daily infections has gradually decreased since.
On Tuesday, the authorities had recorded 2,764 cases, the first time the daily total had fallen below the 3,000 mark since January 13, when the government announced the reimposition of the strict movement control order (MCO) nationwide.
Dr Noor Hisham had also said two days ago that he believes the second MCO is working, saying that the country has turned the corner in its Covid-19 fight.
He told a press conference that infections had peaked at the end of last month, saying he now expects cases to plateau before decreasing further. – The Vibes, February 11, 2021
