GEORGE TOWN – The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has taken gold in the Mobility category of the Sustainable Cities Organisation Awards (WeGO), an accolade that saw it beating other city councils across the world.
State Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said it was the first time MBPP submitted entries to WeGO.
“Both proposals – Mobility and Sustainable City – made it to the finals, and on September 29, WeGO announced that MBPP had won the gold medal for the Mobility category.”
The city council’s Green Connectivity project, which includes dedicated bicycle lanes, business improvement programmes and the Penang Smart parking initiative, contributed to the win.
Jagdeep said the state government will continue efforts to make Penang clean, green, smart and family-oriented.
WeGO, a triennial competition established in 2011, recognises and promotes initiatives that employ information and communications technology to improve quality of life.
Medals are awarded for six categories, namely Efficient Government, Emerging Technology, Mobility, Open and Inclusive City, Safe City and Sustainable City. – The Vibes, October 2, 2020
