A 43-YEAR-OLD man was killed in Marang after being beaten with a hammer, allegedly by his younger brother who suffers from mental health issues, at their family home in Kampung Tasek today.

The victim, Mohd Nasir Ismail, the eldest of nine siblings, sustained fatal head injuries during the incident. Another sibling, Rurazmiza, 36, suffered back injuries while attempting to intervene and separate the pair.

Recounting the tragedy, the victim's mother, Hasnah Sulong, 63, said she was resting in the living room when she heard screams emanating from the rear of the house, followed by heavy striking sounds.

She immediately summoned her husband, Ismail Ibrahim, 80, who was outside. Upon entering, he found their eldest son lying in a pool of blood with catastrophic head trauma.

Hasnah identified her second son, Affendi, 42, who has a history of mental illness, as the suspect involved in the attack.

The mother, who is partially paralysed from a stroke, recalled a similar violent episode 12 years ago when her husband was stabbed by the same son, though the family had continued to live with and care for him at home.

Marang District Police Chief Superintendent Saari Mohamed confirmed the incident when contacted, stating that investigations are ongoing. - October 4, 2026
