KUALA LUMPUR – A senior Umno leader who attended the party’s Supreme Council meeting in Janda Baik, Pahang, on Friday has tested positive for Covid-19.
According to Astro Awani, the Supreme Council member is a senior leader for a division in Selangor.
A source told Awani that several Umno leaders who attended the meeting underwent immediate screening.
However, the source did not reveal the identity of the infected leader who had put those who attended the meeting at risk of contracting the coronavirus.
The source, who is an aide to a minister, told Awani that his boss went for screening the day after learning of the infected council member.
“It’s true, Datuk Seri (the minister) had attended the meeting. The next day, he did a swab test,” the source was quoted as saying.
On Friday, the Umno Supreme Council had convened at the party’s training centre in Janda Baik to discuss the future of its political alliance with Bersatu in Perikatan Nasional, as well as demands for the party to helm the deputy prime minister and finance minister posts.
Despite some loosened restrictions under the movement control order (MCO), interstate and inter-district travel is still generally prohibited.
The meeting that evening raised questions on whether the restrictions are still in place, as the 50-odd Umno leaders had likely travelled across state and district lines to attend the sit-down. – The Vibes, February 21, 2021
