KUALA LUMPUR – PKR is planning to take legal action against Julau MP Larry Sng and Tebrau MP Steven Choong after the duo pledged support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today.
PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in a statement said the duo have also been sacked from the party with immediate effect, in a decision that was made at the monthly central leadership council meeting today.
“PKR apologises to all the voters in Julau and Tebrau for the move of the two MPs who left the party today.
“The leadership has also discussed court action that has been and will be taken against those who have contested on PKR’s ticket, but betrayed the people’s mandate and defected the party.”
Previously, PKR has filed a RM10 million suit against its former women chief Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin after she and several other party elected representatives broke a bond that was signed by all party election candidates prior to the 2018 polls via defection.
Earlier, Muhyiddin announced on Facebook that Sng and Choong have pledged their support for him as independent MPs through signed statutory declarations (SDs) that were submitted today.
The post was accompanied by photos of the trio with the SDs at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
Sng later explained that he decided to quit as he is unable to serve his constituency, which he claimed to be the poorest in the country, effectively due to lack of funds.
Choong, meanwhile, said Muhyiddin understood and agreed that MPs need access to ministers to resolve the people’s issues, citing floods, illegal waste dumping, affordable housing and river pollution, among other problems, in his constituency.
Saifuddin urged PKR’s machinery in Julau and Tebrau to double their efforts in reaching out to voters, resolving issues on the ground and preparing to reclaim the seats in the next general election.
He said this latest development proves that the emergency is being used to ensure the government remains, despite losing its majority.
“This is done by giving them time to get the support of MPs, either through threats or offers of position and other goodies.
“But, even with the betrayal of the two MPs today, Muhyiddin must realise that the majority of MPs no longer want to work with him.
“He should stop his efforts to remain in this weak government, and resign respectfully based on the federal constitution.” – The Vibes, February 28, 2021
