KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional will conduct an internal investigation into a statement by chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last night, as it was not approved by the supreme council.
In a statement issued by BN executive secretary Mohamad Sahfri Ab Aziz today, the coalition said Zahid’s comments do not accurately reflect what was discussed and decided at a recent supreme council meeting.
Sahfri said an officer in the secretariat released Zahid’s statement by mistake, and has been suspended for a month, effective immediately.
This will allow the internal probe to be conducted effectively and in detail, he said.
The Facebook post on Zahid’s statement is still up, but it has been removed from the BN website.
Zahid’s statement said BN is urging its MPs to push the prime minister to immediately reconvene Parliament.
He said Parliament needs to discuss issues, such as the emergency ordinance, effectiveness of Covid-19 mitigation plans, implementation of Budget 2021, economic recovery, as well as the need for political stability and unity between the races.
The coalition views a statement by Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, that the cabinet advises against Parliament reconvening, as a challenge to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s views and decrees, and an insult to constitutional monarchy, he said.
Takiyuddin said calling a Parliament sitting must follow the cabinet’s decision, and the cabinet will not push for it until the state of emergency ends on August 1.
However, an air of similarity permeates the supposedly opposing BN and Pakatan Harapan coalitions, when statements issued by both appear to be in unison, calling for the prime minister and his cabinet to advise the Agong to reconvene Parliament soon.
Noticeably, the statements by Zahid and PH chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mirrored each other in pressuring Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to allow for a parliamentary sitting following the king’s decree earlier that the Dewan Rakyat may convene during a state of emergency. – The Vibes, March 5, 2021
