UMNO would cease any kind of political cooperation if the position of Islam and the party’s struggle for Malay rights was compromised, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

The Umno president said despite assurances being made very often, certain parties continued to push the narrative that the position of Malays and Islam were threatened.

“They sow the seeds of hatred and disgust against Umno.

“The fact is, we have never altered our stand on these issues just to be part of a government,” he said at the opening of the Umno general assembly today.

Zahid also hit out at Bersatu and PAS, accusing them of having betrayed their principles when in power.

He cited the example where when Bersatu was in the government, there were attempts for Malaysia to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd), which Umno was against.

Zahid also took a swipe at PAS when he questioned what they had done to further the agenda on Islam when they were in power.

He said the Islamist party had gone silent on the amendment to Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) and that hudud was no longer their main agenda. – August 23, 2024.
