PUTRAJAYA – The bush on the edge of the industrial area at Jalan Emas in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan has been identified as the main location of pollution sources that caused the closure of the Sg Semenyih water treatment plant (LRA), according to the Environment and Water Ministry (Kasa).

The ministry in a statement today said organic waste and compounds were found at the site.

"The bad odour is almost similar to the odour that caused the stop-work at Sungai Semenyih LRA since yesterday," it said.

The ministry said the illegal waste found was suspected to be managed by an unregistered company.

The police, National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and Department of Environment (DOE) will refer to the findings in the area as a secondary source, it said.

Following the discovery of the source of the pollution, Kasa said six soil samples were taken by the Negeri Sembilan DOE and sent to the Chemistry Department.

The Negeri Sembilan DOE has cordoned off the organic waste disposal area, which is being monitored by the police, while the Seremban City Council and the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) would clean up the bulk waste at the location.

Kasa said Air Selangor has not been able to restore the disrupted water supply as the odour is still strong at between level 7 and 8 TON (threshold odour number) but is trying to reduce the pollution level to zero TON. – Bernama, October 5, 2020
