MIRI – Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has been slammed after individuals wearing T-shirts with the coalition's logo were seen violating health standard operating procedures, not wearing masks and not practicing physical distancing during an event at a Long Terawan village.
These pictures have made their rounds on social media and messaging apps. One of the photos shows a group of people with GPS T-shirts apparently sitting close together at a table.
Baram PKR information chief Dennis Along today shared the photos with reporters here, calling out GPS for violating the Covid-19 SOPs that they drew up.
“The pictures were taken by villagers in Long Terawan during the visit by the chief minister to the village (on April 6 to launch an internet broadband project).
“Videos taken during the event saw GPS putting up banners and flags with its logo at the longhouse and surrounding villages.
“Why are GPS leaders carrying out political campaigning during a Covid-19 surge? GPS leaders are not adhering to the very SOPs they drew up. They are showing very bad examples to the rakyat,” Along said.
He said their behaviour was dangerous as they can spread Covid-19 in Long Terawan, located in the interior of Mulu National Park, about 300km from Miri.
Along also slammed the chief minister for playing politics amid the pandemic, saying they were using government functions for political campaigning ahead of the state polls.
On April 6, Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Openg launched the broadband internet service project in Long Terawan.
Johari said the northern Sarawak Highland Development Authority had been given an allocation of RM1.5 billion by the state government to develop the infrastructure in that region.
“The money will be used for road upgrading, the provision of electricity and water supply, construction of bridges, and also the provision of internet services. We aim to provide an internet connection to every rural settlement.” – The Vibes, April 8, 2021
