GEORGE TOWN – Register for the Covid-19 vaccination, Penang exco member Jagdeep Singh Deo urged teachers today, seeing that schools have been reopened for face-to-face lessons.
He said teachers and school staff are considered frontliners as they are in contact with millions of students, and getting vaccinated will keep the children and themselves safe from the coronavirus.
The vaccine is only administered to those aged 18 and above, so, Jagdeep said, teachers and school staff have to ensure their well-being for the children’s sake.
“I have said this before and the Health Ministry has acknowledged it. I think they are looking at ways to expedite and prioritise teachers for vaccination,” he said at an event in SJK(C) Han Chiang here today.
Jagdeep, who is state local government, housing, town and country planning committee chairman, said the administration of vaccines for teachers in Penang will be conducted in phases.
“As for Penang, some 9,000 teachers will be vaccinated. However, I am unsure if it will be before or after April 19.
“I want to ask all teachers to quickly register on the MySejahtera app for vaccination. Get it done quickly because millions of people are in line. If you miss your turn, you’ll have to wait.”
Phase 2 of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme was originally reserved for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and those with chronic diseases.
It is set to begin on April 19 in Kedah, Melaka, Penang, Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Labuan, before other states follow suit, depending on the readiness of vaccination centres and their staff. – The Vibes, April 10, 2021
