KUALA LUMPUR – Putrajaya will repatriate Malaysians in northern and western India following the worrying spike in Covid-19 infections there.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, in a statement, said the mission will include home-based staff of various agencies, along with their dependents.
“The repatriation mission will be implemented with the use of specially rented aircraft from Malaysia, which will depart to New Delhi and Mumbai as soon as approval for matters relating to flights is obtained from the Indian government.”
He said the latest wave of the pandemic in the South Asian country is “very concerning”.
The repatriation effort is jointly carried out by the Foreign and Health Ministries, and National Disaster Management Agency, he said.
“It is important for me to stress that the decision to carry out this repatriation mission was made by various agencies.
“The decision also took into account the information obtained from observation and analysis made at Malaysian representative offices in India.”
The Malaysians involved will have to undergo compulsory Covid-19 screenings before departing India, and a 14-day quarantine at facilities approved by Putrajaya upon their arrival home, said Hishammuddin.
