MIRI – A state minister is calling on all families to play a bigger role in ensuring their loved ones adhere strictly to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to curb the increase in Covid-19 infections and fatalities in Sarawak.
State Welfare, Community Well-being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said it is frustrating to see so many people flouting SOPs, leading to Mother’s Day not being able to be celebrated openly.
“This year, like last year, we observed May 9 as Mother’s Day amid the pandemic.
“Each day, we hope that the state Disaster Management Committee will announce a decrease in the number of Covid-positive cases but our hearts sink with dismay each time the number increases or remains so high.
“We fear for the safety of our parents, children, neighbourhood and the state of Sarawak.
“We long for normalcy again, and we are feeling fatigue of the new norm.
“We see more cases of non-compliance with SOPs and that makes us angry.
“This is where we, as parents, mothers and grandmothers, can play a role to help contain this pandemic.
“Start with yourself, our families, neighbours, communities. Comply with all SOPs.
“Those with symptoms, even if it’s normal flu, go for health checks. Better be safe than sorry.
“Encourage and help register those in your families who are eligible for vaccination.
“Together, we can win this war,” she said.
Sarawak has seen 208 Covid-19 deaths and some 35,000 cases as of yesterday evening.
It is frequently among the top three states in the country recording the highest number of new daily cases. – The Vibes, May 10, 2021
