KUALA LUMPUR – The collision between two light rail transit trains on the Kelana Jaya line last night has not deterred the public from using public transport.
Library assistant Asfa Abdullah, 24, said she is aware of the incident but will still take the LRT, pointing out that accidents are unavoidable for either public or private transport.
“The risk is always there, even if we use our own vehicles. However, I hope the passenger safety aspect can be improved to avoid a recurrence of the incident,” she told Bernama at the KLCC LRT station today.
Private sector employee Eliana Masiran, 39, said she will definitely continue using the LRT as the service is convenient, seeing that her office is located in the city centre.
“I used to ride a motorcycle, but now that I’m pregnant, I choose to take the LRT as it’s safer. Although I have a car, the LRT is more convenient, as well as cheaper.”
Shop assistant Muhd Azlan Elfi Mohd Faizul, 17, said the crash yesterday caused him concern, and that he needs some time to have the confidence to use the service again.
“I am a frequent user, riding from the Damai station to the KLCC station. But today, I asked my father to send me to work.”
Information technology administrator Mohd Zubair Ab Ghani, 35, said the train he was travelling in from the Wangsa Maju station to the Ampang Park station today was quite packed, as the Kelana Jaya line is operating on just one track today.
“The train also stopped for 20 minutes at each station, so many people had the opportunity to fill up the train. What’s usually a 15-minute journey turned into an hour-long one this morning.”
In the incident about 8.30pm yesterday, 213 people were hurt – six of them in critical condition – when two LRT trains crashed in the tunnel near the KLCC station.
One of the trains was carrying passengers, while the other had only the driver. – Bernama, May 25, 2021
