KUCHING – Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen has called on the state government to ramp up Covid-19 vaccination to quickly attain herd immunity against the disease.

The state government must initiate mass screening to effectively trace carriers of the coronavirus and curtail the rising infections in both rural and urban communities, he said.

Party workers from the Bandar Kuching and Stampin branches yesterday got together to carry out a sanitisation exercise at the Batu Kawa Old Bazaar and surrounding commercial areas.

“This is the second sanitisation exercise carried out by our volunteer team after a similar exercise was conducted at the Kenyalang Park Commercial Centre. I would like to thank the selfless efforts of the volunteers,” said Chong.

“Despite our constraint in resources, we will make do with whatever we have to help the people in the affected areas.

“Our focus will be on public places where there are confirmed Covid-19 cases or clusters, and also upon request by residents.”

Sarawak has seen an average daily increase of three new deaths and 596 cases, according to acting state health director Dr Rosmawati Arifin.

“In May alone (May 2 to 25), there were 74 Covid-19 deaths. There are presently 83 Covid-19 patients in critical condition in the state’s intensive care units, with 32 of them needing ventilators to breathe.” – The Vibes, May 25, 2021
