ALOR STAR – Kedah DAP has urged the federal government to reintroduce a three-month loan moratorium and targeted financial aid to all groups affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its chairman Tan Kok Yew in a statement today said Putrajaya could work with MP offices and state assemblies in channelling assistance and accurate information on vaccination programmes.
“I feel that we should be more serious and united in fighting Covid-19. We must put aside political differences as this virus does not choose its victims based on political persuasion, religion or race.”
With the current alarming number of Covid-19 cases, Tan said many are calling for a lockdown of all economic sectors, but the people, especially those in the B40 and M40 groups, and businesses will be severely affected.
The government needs to implement several initiatives, including distributing more food baskets to those in need, he added.
He suggested the government mobilise existing agencies, such as the Disaster Management Agency, non-governmental organisations, local authorities and community leaders to help distribute aid in their respective areas.
Malaysia will be placed under a two-week total lockdown from June 1 to June 14.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced the move after the country breached 8,000 Covid-19 cases on Friday. – The Vibes, May 30, 2021
