KUALA LUMPUR – The family of a victim of the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit Line collision last Monday are demanding RM1.8 million from Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, reported MalaysiaGazette.
Wong Chee Foong’s family have filed a claim against the public transport operator following a statement issued by the company that each victim will be compensated RM1,000, have their medical bills paid for, and receive payment to cover loss of income.
The family were reported as saying the RM1,000 amount is insufficient, as Wong sustained serious injuries.
They are also disappointed by Prasarana’s lack of an appropriate response to the incident and approach when contacting them.
The family, through Jazzmine Khoo & Associates, have filed an application to claim RM1.8 million for medical expenses, physical damage, mental and emotional stress, trauma, loss of income, special and general damages, and negligence.
The 52-year-old Wong, who is a chef at a five-star hotel, is reportedly one of the LRT passengers being treated in Kuala Lumpur Hospital’s (HKL) intensive care unit.
He has four children, aged between 3 and 15, and is the family’s sole breadwinner.
MalaysiaGazette reported that he boarded the train at the KLCC station, near where the accident occurred in a tunnel.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has been in talks with victims of the crash, and visited one of them at HKL last Tuesday.
In a Facebook post last week, he said he did not have the opportunity to meet another four victims in intensive care.
“Yesterday, I made calls to all the victims who are still hospitalised (or their families). During my conversation with the families, I asked about the victims’ current condition, and discussed a few issues to ensure that they receive the best care.
“I heard their grievances, and requested that they contact me directly for any assistance.”
The incident about 8.30pm last Monday saw two LRT trains – one coming from Kg Baru and the other from Gombak heading towards Petaling Jaya – colliding.
Of the 213 victims, 64 were sent to HKL. Six were in critical condition, with three requiring ventilators. Fifteen were in semi-critical condition, and the rest sustained non-critical injuries. – The Vibes, May 31, 2021
