BALIK PULAU – Covid-19 volunteers and staff operating at the vaccination centre here were given a well-deserved, locally grown surprise when they were treated to the famed durian and glutinous rice by the Balik Pulau MP.

Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik told The Vibes he made the contribution of 120 packages of the wholesome, tasty delicacy in appreciation of frontliners on duty here in the fight against Covid-19.

Balik Pulau, a largely agricultural area on southwestern Penang island, is famed for its durians.

Bakhtiar said the gesture was also like “killing two birds with one stone” because it also involved helping out local small traders running durian and glutinous rice businesses.

“When someone mentions durian, many will think of me because I am the MP for Balik Pulau.

“So, I took this opportunity to please the staff who are stationed at the vaccination centre at the Balik Pulau Sports Complex,” he said.

The former deputy tourism, arts and culture minister described the Balik Pulau durian as having a charm of its own.

“Before there was Covid-19, many leaders would contact me to get Balik Pulau durians every time (durian) season dawned,” he said.

“But, now because the movement is quite limited due to the lockdown, I’m a little relieved,” he said in jest.

Durian season in Balik Pulau is often anticipated by fans of the “king of fruits” because the local durian is said to have its own distinct flavour, apart from being of a different variety and quality.

Balik Pulau’s durian season this year began at the end of May, and is expected to last till August. – The Vibes, June 12, 2021
