KUALA LUMPUR – The two lawyers allegedly involved in text messages that were said to have brought the judiciary into disrepute have filed police reports over the matter.
Lawyers Datuk Lim Chee Wee and Rosli Dahlan have filed the reports on separate accounts today.
In a statement, Lim confirmed that he had lodged a police report over the text messages and that he will “fully cooperate and assist the police in this matter”.
“These purported text messages contain fabrications and baseless allegations. I never made any such statements in the purported text messages.”
Lim’s statement comes after he was named among the lawyers who are involved in two civil appeals pending a court decision.
On June 7, a special officer to Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat lodged a police report on the text messages.
Following that, the police classified the case under Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for alleged improper use of network facilities, as well as Section 500 and 504 of the Penal Code for alleged criminal investigation and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.
Lim also denied having any current involvement in the case.
“The company named (in this case) is no longer my client since I left my former firm in June 2020. I have not communicated with or been involved in any way with the company for over a year.”
Meanwhile, Rosli had filed a similar report, according to the document sighted by The Vibes.
Rosli’s report indicated that he had filed it at the Kota Damansara police station at about 3pm today.
In the report, Rosli said news site Sarawak Report had published the screenshots of the messages that were then the subject of the judge’s police report.
“After viewing the screenshots, it is clear that it does not have any relation with me or my work as a lawyer. My name has been included without any basis.
“I do not have any knowledge of the matter that was referenced in the screenshot,” read the police report.
The article in Sarawak Report mentioned that Rosli was involved in a legal case involving Norwegian oil and gas services provider Aker Solutions, which is said to be at the centre of the issue.
“I do not know, do not recognise, and never have dealt or communicated with a company named Aker or any other party in the screenshots.
“I do not represent any party in the case, and am not appointed as a defence lawyer or counsel and do not have any direct or indirect involvement in the matter referenced in the case.”
Rosli added that he knows Lim as the former Malaysian Bar president and as a lawyer, and in his professional capacity.
He said he does not personally know the chief justice or has her contact number nor met with her on any social occasion. – The Vibes, June 20, 2021
