KUCHING – Datuk Abang Johari Openg today said the Sarawak election must be held following the end next June of the state assembly’s term.

Though there are quarters calling for the polls to be postponed until after the Covid-19 crisis is over, said the chief minister, the state assembly must be dissolved, paving the way for an election.

“We have to go back to the people (for a fresh mandate), and we have a good government to manage Covid-19 (during the election),” he said when closing the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) convention here.

Abang Johari said the state ought to be ruled by Sarawakians, and not outsiders.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak chairman called on all components – SUPP, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, Progressive Democratic Party and Parti Rakyat Sarawak – to work together towards securing victory in the next state election.

With Sarawak having won a suit on petroleum sales tax with Petronas, he said, the state will continue to fight for its rights over its natural resources. – Bernama, October 18, 2020
