SANDAKAN – To cope with the rising number of Covid-19 infections here, the district’s sole hospital today opened a third treatment centre at the Sandakan sports complex’s hostel, which will house low-risk patients.
The centre, about 8km from Duchess of Kent Hospital (HDOK), has 150 beds. Another such centre is located in the sports complex’s badminton hall, which has 200 beds and began operations on Wednesday.
The first treatment centre was opened at the Batu Putih flats at Mile 7. It has 230 beds, but can fit up to 400 if need be.
HDOK director Dr Francis Paul said there are 769 beds in the district designated for coronavirus cases, with 176 of them in the hospital itself.
He thanked the Sabah Sports Board, Sandakan Municipal Council and donors for helping make the latest centre a reality.
Sandakan yesterday recorded 40 new Covid-19 cases, taking its total to 645. – The Vibes, October 18, 2020
