KUALA LUMPUR – A homeless man, believed to be mentally ill, has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in seven cases of vehicles being torched from June 15 to Tuesday.
The suspect was apprehended in Jalan Besar Kepong on Tuesday. He is believed to have set a Mitsubishi lorry alight in Jalan Ambong 1 the previous day.
Sentul district police chief Beh Eng Lai said the man, who was unable to produce identity documents, was detained about 3am while riding a bicycle.
The arrest came after police received information pointing to the suspect’s alleged involvement in the Monday incident.
“The fire was extinguished, but damage to the lorry amounted to RM10,000 in losses,” said Beh in a statement yesterday.
“Under two hours later the same day, police received another report on a fire, also involving a lorry, in Jalan Mergastua, Kepong Baru. The vehicle was 70% burnt.”
The suspect has been remanded until next Monday to facilitate investigations under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire. – Bernama, July 1, 2021
