KUALA LUMPUR – National transport operator Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has confirmed the appointment of Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim as its new non-executive chairman.
In a statement today, the company also confirmed the appointment of Malaysia Airlines Bhd chief transformation officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah as its president and group chief executive.
Both appointments will come into effect on July 15, the company said.
“The board of directors and senior management of Prasarana Group welcomes the appointments of Jamaludin and Azharuddin,” it said.
“The vast experience of both figures in leading large companies in terms of operations and administration, as well as their involvement in formulating policies and initiatives for the public sector, is a great advantage for Prasarana in pursuing its agenda to improve the quality of public transport services, especially in the face of the challenges brought by the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
The appointments also confirm the report carried by The Vibes yesterday, in which people familiar with the matter said Jamaludin was tipped to take over the reins following the sacking of Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman on May 26.
Tajuddin, who is Pasir Salak MP, was removed over his conduct during a press conference concerning a collision between two light rail transit trains last month.
Prasarana said that Jamaludin, who former Axiata Group Bhd president and CEO, was the backbone of the telecommunications company's transformation, overseeing its operations in 11 Asean and South Asian countries.
The company said Jamaludin brings 40 years of work experience, including 16 years in information technology and 23 years in telecommunications and other fields in the public and private sectors, including education.
Last year, Jamaludin was appointed by the prime minister as a member of the Economic Action Council, which is mandated to boost and stimulate sustainable economic growth, equitable distribution of wealth, and further improve the well-being of the people.
“He is also a member of the National Council for the Digital Economy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4), which serves as the highest office in setting the policies, implementation and monitoring of digital economy and IR4 strategies and initiatives in the country.”
Azharuddin, meanwhile, had also served as Malaysia Airline's chief transformation officer from 2019 to this year, and was responsible for long-term transformation of the information technology and digital divisions of the national carrier.
Prior to that, Azharuddin was chief executive of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) between 2015 and 2018, and served in the government's Performance Management & Delivery Unit (Pemandu) as its director of the Urban Land Public Transport and Greater KL-Klang Valley division from 2014 to 2015.
“While serving at SPAD, Azharuddin was responsible for matters related to public transport policy, planning, development and enforcement as well as the improvement of rail services (LRT, MRT, ERL, monorail and KTM), taxis, buses and commercial vehicles,” Prasarana said. – The Vibes, July 1, 2021
