KOTA KINABALU – There is no need to subject Sabah to a total lockdown for now, said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

However, the senior minister did not dismiss the possibility of one being imposed, should the Health Ministry advise it.

“The Health Ministry is monitoring daily cases in Sabah, and at this point, there is no need to implement a total lockdown,” he said in his daily briefing in Petaling Jaya today.

“But, the ministry might call for it in the future.”

Sabah is huge, he said, with some of its districts bigger than certain states in the peninsula.

“For instance, Kinabatangan; the size of the district is the same as Pahang.”

A screenshot has made the rounds online, purportedly of Sabah government officials saying a two-week total lockdown will be proposed by deputy chief ministers at a state cabinet meeting next week.

The whole state is under the conditional movement control order, with certain areas with high Covid-19 caseloads subjected to the targeted enhanced movement control order.

Ismail Sabri said a lockdown will be imposed on Kapayan Prison and its staff quarters in Matambai.

The prison has been declared a cluster, with 49 individuals testing positive for Covid-19.

It will be under lockdown from Wednesday to November 3. – The Vibes, October 19, 2020
