GEORGE TOWN – The new KitaJaga.co site, which allows Malaysians to wave virtual white flags, has caught the attention of two Penang reps.
Seri Delima assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid told The Vibes that through the site, she has been responding to families raising the white flag, on top of the list of recipients her team has been helping since the first movement control order (MCO) was imposed in March last year.
“My office and the Village Community Management Council have distributed food items, such as fresh vegetables, chicken meat and fish, as well as other essentials.
“It pains me as a Malaysian to see other Malaysians hurting. The pandemic never seems to end. People need help, and the year has been a real eye-opener – how people react, respond and treat each other.”
She said the most-requested items are eggs, rice, sanitary napkins, diapers and milk powder.
“The white flag movement is a good initiative as it raises awareness and compassion.
“Neighbours and strangers have been donating and helping these families. What we need right now is love and compassion – these are the two elements that can guide us through these dark times.”
Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee Chun Kit, too, is trying to help his constituents, especially those who display the white flag.
“The biggest need is still food. As for other needs, we try to work out with welfare agencies and state organisations to help. But what they (people) really want is a job.
“The indefinite span of lockdowns has destroyed the economy, while Covid-19 case numbers remain high.”
Since KitaJaga.co was launched on Monday, many who need help have flown virtual white flags, stating what they require and how they ended up in such dire straits. Many Malaysians have reached out via the site to offer assistance.
The site was developed by Terato Tech, a company based in Bangi, Selangor.
