KUALA LUMPUR – Educationist groups Dong Zong and Jiao Zong have suggested that RM100 million be set aside for Chinese primary schools in Budget 2021.

Dong Zong president Tan Tai Kim said since 2014, the annual allocation of RM50 million can be used only for facility maintenance and repairs.

“There are 883 Chinese primary schools – more than Tamil primary schools (525), mission schools (438) and government-sponsored religious schools (221), which receive the same amount of allocation,” he was reported as saying in China Press today.

“Therefore, Chinese primary schools need more budget.”

He said pupils’ parents have contributed a lot to these schools’ repairs and maintenance.

“This year, the Education Ministry suddenly took RM43.78 million for repairs and facility maintenance, leaving only RM6.22 million for allocation purposes.”

He said the RM50 million amount for Chinese schools is unrealistic, adding that more funding is needed to hire substitute teachers. – The Vibes, October 23, 2020
