MIRI – The stubborn and carefree attitude of Sarawakians are to be blamed, as the state records its highest daily infections yet with 1,216 Covid-19 cases today.

In stating so, Sarawak Health Director Datuk Dr Mohamed Sapian Mohamed said social gatherings, family celebrations, mass congregations for prayers, funerals, meetings, group sports, loitering in crowded places, refusal to wear facemasks and lack of social distancing are among the causes that contributed to the number.

“Today, Sarawak sees a new record of Covid-19 infections.

“Those 1,216 new cases that were recorded today mark the highest daily increase since the pandemic early last year.

“The careless behaviour of the people and their lackadaisical attitude towards the current situation are causing the infections to continue spreading,” he said in a press statement today.

Dr Sapian said Kuching district recorded the most infections with 752 cases, followed by Serian with 236 and Samarahan with 101.

Two new Covid-19 deaths were logged, including a 50-year-old man in Kuching and a 69-year-old woman in Serian, bringing the state’s coronavirus death toll to 477.

Dr Sapian called on the people to avoid public places and remain at home as much as possible.

The state Disaster Management Committee said three new clusters were recorded, comprising a village in Samarahan, a workplace in Betong and a village in Mukah, with a total of 105 people infected so far. – The Vibes, August 12, 2021
