KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed the coalition’s choice of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the nation’s next prime minister.
The Pagoh MP said 31 MPs from Bersatu, 18 from PAS, and one from STAR submitted statutory declarations confirming their support of the Bera MP.
“Four pro-PN independent MPs have done the same.
“I also negotiated with GPS and PBS' leadership to take the same stance,” Muhyiddin said in a statement today.
He added that this decision shows that PN prioritises political stability and the nation’s well-being, as opposed to revenge politics to hold on to power.
However, Muyihddin said their support of Umno’s vice-president is conditional.
“If appointed prime minister by the king, he must ensure that the cabinet appointed must comprise those with integrity, free from any criminal accusations in court,” Muhyiddin added.
The Pagoh MP added he will serve the coalition by readying it for the next election.
Today, 114 MPs believed to be supporting Ismail Sabri as prime minister arrived for an audience with the king to confirm their statutory declarations.
The MPs are from Umno (37), Bersatu (31), GPS and PAS (18 each), MCA (two), and MIC, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah, and Sabah Star (one each), as well as four independents.
On Monday, Muhyiddin resigned as prime minister after 15 MPs from Umno led by party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi withdrew support from the PN administration. – The Vibes, August 19, 2021
