YAN – A rubber tapper is appealing for the authorities’ help to “bury” a “new river” that emerged after the devastating floods and water column phenomenon at Gunung Jerai last week.
Marzuki Othman, 59, said he is worried that his house in Batu Hampar here will be surrounded by water and become an “island”, making it difficult for his family to relocate.
“The Public Works Department carried out excavation yesterday afternoon. But, I am worried about soil erosion or flooding again if the authorities do not get rid of this ‘new river’ immediately," he told The Vibes.
A video of Marzuki’s residence has gone viral on social media, with a netizen claiming that a “new river” was formed following the floods.
Marzuki said his children and grandchildren are having fun playing in the said “river”.
“They are happy, but I am worried. Also, the weather is unpredictable now,” said the father of three.
A week after the tragedy, most residents in the affected areas have returned to their normal routine.
Many non-governmental organisations have delivered aid, including food and other basic necessities.
Siti Sharliza Ruzalan, 24, said she is grateful that many people contributed to ease the burden on flood victims.
“After the incident, I could only cry and grieve over the destruction I saw. But I am grateful for the help rendered by many people since the first day (of the disaster).
“My landlord gave me a rent exemption this month, and I feel a little relieved,” said Siti Sharliza, adding that she has been renting the house for three years. – The Vibes, August 25, 2021
