KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 1,240 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 27,805. This is the highest number of cases to be recorded in one day.

About 1,238 infections were locally transmitted while two were imported, according to the Ministry of Health.

Currently there are 9,744 active cases with 94 of them requiring intensive care, with 31 on ventilator support.

Seven more fatalities were reported today, raising the death toll to 236.

On a positive note, there were also 691 recovered cases, leading the total number of recoveries to rise to 17,825.

The two imported cases involve two foreigners returning from Russia and Ukraine.

For the local cases, Sabah recorded the highest number of cases (927), followed by Selangor (176), Penang (61), Negri Sembilan (25), Kuala Lumpur (17), Labuan (5), Perak (8), Johor (4), Terengganu (3), Sarawak (7), Kedah (3), Melaka (2).

Three new clusters were also identified today, namely Kapor Cluster, Hampar Cluster and Tapah Prison Cluster.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the Sabah healthcare system was not on the brink of collapse, and that it still has capacity to treat Covid-19 patients.

"I'm not sure why the people prefer to listen to misperception when the facts and data speaks for itself," he said at a press conference today.

He also said that there are 24 hospitals ready to treat Covid-19 in Sabah, with bed capacity, intensive care units and ventilators, as well as personal protective equipment available.

"I ask the public to refer to the official social media platforms of the Health Ministry to receive the accurate facts and data," he said.

He added that the war against Covid-19 can only be won if everyone plays a role in comply with the standard operating procedures. – The Vibes, October 26, 2020
