GURUN – Heavy rainfall for more than two hours at Titi Hayun and the Seri Perigi Waterfall in Yan today has caused flash floods in the areas near Gunung Jerai, reigniting panic among residents who are still traumatised by the flooding disaster earlier this month.

Yan Fire and Rescue Department supervisor Rosli Mat Yusoff said the latest floods were caused after rivers overflowed, as their banks in Titi Hayun are already damaged by the deadly floods and landslides on August 18.

Although the rain today became especially heavy at about 1pm, the situation was not alarming, he said.

The Titi Hayun homestay estate was among the places hit today.

“The rushing rainwater overflowed past the damaged riverbanks while repair works are still being carried out to create a safer environment for residents.

“A couple of village houses are damaged due to the flash floods. However, the situation in the area is not alarming and the public need not fear,” he said.

Rosli added that the situation abated soon after the rain stopped about 2pm.

The disaster on August 18 that hit Yan and Kuala Muda, both near Gunung Jerai, led to the areas being declared “emergency zones” by the government.

Massive gushes of water and sliding earth from the mountain were accompanied by flooding in areas near the foothills, affecting thousands of homes.

The incident left six people dead.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had visited Yan and Kuala Muda to assess the damages on August 23. – The Vibes, September 2, 2021.
